Andrew Bullough

In 2005, Alan Davies, Secretary for Werneth and Oldham Federation, wrote the following;
Mr Andrew Bullough, 60 years on OMBC allotments sites
I have known Andrew for 20 years or so. He has had an allotment for 60 years. It all started in 1945 when he got his first allotment on Copster Hill Park allotments. He left there in 1948 to come to Werneth Park Allotments and has been here ever since.
He started off on plot 30 for two years, later he moved to plot 36 and 3 years on he moved to plot 7. He has been working plot 7 for the last 52 Years.
I think that over that time, Andrew has won every cup and plate that there is to win in Oldham and afar. There are not many allotment holders who would get up and be on their plot at 5.00am in the morning to ensure that what they were putting in the Oldham or Werneth shows was just right.
One of Andrews's big days was when he was on Gardeners World with Geoff Hamilton. He even showed Geoff a couple of his gardening tricks. I think that some of our members still have it on video.
Andrew is always willing to give good advice to new-comers at Werneth. I would find most Saturdays in the summer Andrew working his plot and his wife Daisy sat knitting and always a basket with their afternoon tea in it.
Andrew was one of the members who started Oldham Federation of Allotment Societies; he has been chair, secretary, and treasurer, at both Oldham Federation of Allotment Societies, and at Werneth.
Andrew is a gentleman and it is a pleasure to know him. Andrew still works his plot at the age of 95. To finish I once asked Andrew,
"How come you never get weeds", his reply was,
"Alan, I do not grow them."

From the Oldham Chronicle
A Champion gardener who won the Chronicle Horticultural Cup for the best kept allotment more times than anyone else, has died aged 97.
Mr Andrew Bullough moved from Oldham to Herefordshire to live with his son John several years ago, but he kept up his horticultural hobby until he became ill last year.
Mr Bullough's plot at the Werneth Park Allotments was his pride and joy for more than 60 years and his dedication was rewarded with an array of trophies and awards he won over the years including 19 Chronicle cups.
Mr Bullough was one of the founding members of the Oldham Federation of Allotment Societies and over the years he was chairman, secretary and treasurer as well as President of the Werneth Park Allotment Society.
In 1988, Mr Bullough - who would spend 40 hours each week tending his plot - became the first person in the Werneth Park Allotment Society's history to win first prize in all six categories.
Two years later, Mr Bullough was invited to London after winning a national competition in the Gardening News magazine and he enjoyed a taste of fame when he appeared on "Gardeners World" to show presenter Geoff Hamilton a few tricks.
